Nice post. Did you get a chance to see the movie yet Joe?
Got a chance to see it on Friday night.
Definitely lives up to the hype that it's been getting. Delivers a lot more than just talk about Helvetica, sort of a historical look at design and who's who of some of the current players. Some good comedic moments as well. From the movie and the Q&A which followed one thing that was reinforced for me was the subjectivity of graphic design and aesthetic. Listening to Spiekermann talk about Helvetica you would be convinced that he was speaking purely from fact... then sharply contrasted by Massimo Vignelli who would argue the exact opposite--also completely convincingly. Nice to see some people talk with balls about this kind of stuff and take a firm stand based purely on personal opinion. Basically it seemed to boil down to 'do you like modernism or not'.
Of interest in the Q&A was Vignelli's response to "What is your favo(u)rite city based upon its visual language?". After gushing over how beautiful Zurick was (and when I say gush I mean GUSH... you could swear he was talking about his favourite Playboy centerfold), he actually mentioned Toronto*! yehaw! Almost wanted to get up and cheer.
Also really cool to see Matthew Carter talk and see a bit of Sych in David Carson.
*then he mumbled something about 'during the 70s...'

Carmel, perhaps you are unaware but if I don't at least try to feign assimilation in this land of stars and stripes I risk being tortured by homeland security and sent back to Canada.
