A to the NYC
NYC MOFO!
yes, it was quite the trip. the short version:
FRIDAY: mandy and i arrived, took a cab, stood outside yelling "hey joe!" (that's when i knew i was in NYC). dropped stuff off, back out to a funny little resto, then out and about bar hopping in lower east side at some crazy bars. one bar had a back room behind a velvet curtain...with some woman dressed up as a fairy doing poor renditions of poems probably written by her creepy guitar player. we ran into an ex-pat OCAD, hopped some more, headed to a bar in an abandoned brooklyn warehouse neighbourhood that was hilariously funny, if only for the small posse of gangbangers dancing to madonna classics and the fact that if you bought a pint, they gave you a whole cheese pizza! crazy. we ended the night at a place called barcade full of, yep, classic arcade machines.
SATURDAY: hangover, coffee from a sweet place down the street. sat on joe's rooftop and checked out manhattan and the flock of pigeons doing aerial maneouvers. toured central manhattan, checked out the usual: times square, grand central, union square, fun. coffee shop burgers, back home to nap. back out again into the warehouses of brooklyn, specifically an old domino sugar factory where the cut&paste design competition was. free tees and ipod holders from Adobe, got to play on a sick tablet-monitor. competition was pretty wicked, but i think we could've done better (more on that later). head kinda drunk to a burrito spot.
SUNDAY: shopping day! wicked stores (exit 9, brooklyn industries), wandered through chelsea, soho, greenwich village. dinner in chelsea, wine from a great little wine shop, coffee at cafe dante (apparently the first cappucino in north america). back home to wax philosophical about design over oodles of wine with our gracious hosts.
MONDAY: packed up and headed out to see wall street and the southern tip of the island. up to ground zero, then up to fancy land (trump, tiffany's) and central park. the illustration museum was closed, so we ate and took the train through queens (took the sheen off) and back to the airport.
yeah, we're pooped. what a city. big thanks to joe and kristine for being the greatest hosts ever. i am content that i saw not a one museum--that's for next time. oh, and ps: what a type wonderland. photos to come soon.
