th nw nglsh

while walking home today, i came across a poster for reebok. i don't know when they rebranded, but did anyone notice their new logo lacks vowels? also, a couple of months ago the fontfont people come up with FF mt, a new "condensed" typeface to save space and the environment (riiight), apparently already being used in berlin for road signage. our english language dictionaries are accepting more colloquial speak than ever before, i imagine. new technologies like cellphone texting (ie: blackberrys) make shortforms like "ttyl" and "rotflmao" socially acceptable (i still think they're stupid). i'm sure this is just the ebb and flow of our language, but is anyone concerned about the future of english? as i write this post with proper punctuation but no capital letters at the beginning of my sentences, i open the floor for discussion.

okay i don't have any idea what the griz "rotflmao" means.

but the reebok thing is pronouced R B K, like they don't call it reebok anymore.

but i did find it a bit hard to read those words without the vowels. if it was on a sign and i was going by fast, i don't think i would get it. maybe i am slow, which could be it, but i dunno.

neat idea but i don't think it works that well yet, i guess unless you pick really specific words.

i need vowels. vwls, i mean that just looks like owls.

FF mt (designed by Spiekermann) is available as a free download on Fontshops website.

I got the impression the mt wasn't fully meant to be about svng th nvrnmt but more about reading text quickly and efficiently online.

I agree, it's bad for the english language but I think it's a great concept and a very original way of designing type. lv th spkrmnn.
