who wants one?
Okay, let's get a round-up going on who plans to buy/wants/needs the iPhone. Not sure when it's coming to Canada, but those of us in a real country* can potentially get it on June 29. Are you going to line up for it, or wait a few months/a year for the technology to get better? Are you willing to sell your soul to pay for the service fees? [I already sold mine for a Kriss Kross tape and some neon green bicycle shorts - back in '92]
When it comes down to it... do we really care? As designers, we have come to depend on computers (Macintosh, mostly) for our day to day working needs. Is Apple starting to lose touch with its core market? Personally, I think they really dropped the ball with the CS3 team (Quark conspiracy?) - and I'm starting to wonder if I really need to spend $599 US on a phone... that does everything I could ever want. Maybe I should pay a homeless guy to line up in Soho for me - I could always sell it on eBay.
*where we can get the iPhone, but pay $700 US to see a doctor, about seeing doctor.

I would also like to acknowledge, that we have already discussed the iPhone on this blog. One thing I did fail to consider however, is the possibility that Apple's new ad campaign is not showing in Canada.
Here in the States, Sunday night viewers were blessed with a Super Bowl style advertising moment when the new ads hit the air, creating a fever-pitch of excitement this morning. The iPhone is actually happening.
www.apple.com to see the tv spots.
slightly-contained excitement aside, i think you bring up some interesting points. i'm not sure what you mean about dropping the CS3 ball -- i have it, it's a friggin dream. as for losing touch with its core (by this, i assume you mean designers, tech, etc.), i believe it is more likely that they have pretty much perfected the mac system (it's a well-oiled machine) and are looking to larger, wider horizons. they have the rest of the world to convince, afterall. while this may be problematic for various reasons (more exposure + virus potential, diluted values), i don't think we'll see a real change in how apple functions for a long while. they seem (or are convincing, at least) to have all the right forward-thinking attitudes across their whole product line, and have continued to produce above-expectation devices. maybe you're just a bit jealous our little club is expanding?
i might be buying into the hype, but most importantly, i really think this new phone is the new benchmark for the next level of how our society uses communication devices -- if you really think about it, it uses about as much functionality with current technologies as you can imagine. my problem: who the hell wants to watch pirates of the carribean?
i want to watch poc (pirates of the carribean)
duh, jonny depp on my phone.
that shit is the griz.
Lee don't lie, '92 my ass... I saw you wearing those neon green bicycle shorts just last week, they looked brand new.
when i mentioned how they dropped the ball with CS3 - I meant how there was a good 5, if not 8 months between the new Intel macs and a the CS3 software. Adobe complains that Apple didn't give them enough warning. If CS3 would have come out the same day as the new Intel macs... that would have been a smart move. I think Apple was giving Quark the leg-up, maybe?
Don't get me wrong, I love the apple products... I just wonder, if the iPhone takes of at twice the speed as the iPod did - will Jobs slowly give less attention to the graphic design market of his business and just concentrate on being a TV/MUSIC/BLING company.
I have to agree with Anth on this one. Mac is after the world's respect. I'd like to think that they would return to making better systems when the market needs it. Frankly, and at the risk of sounding like an old fizart, I'm pretty happy with what my computer is capable of for now.
If lee gets that phone he's going to get a ridiculous amounts of poon!!! ...do it!
Ok so the short answer is no, no iphone for me. Not because it's not a cool ass gadget, but just cause it's more phone than I or most people need. If I needed a phone/blackberry/Ipod then maybe, but I already have #1 & #3 and certainly no desire for #2. The iphone while very cool, is way over kill. But I think Anth is right, it's gonna set the bar for the next wave of uber cool devices and I'm sure I'll want one of those. So guess I'll wait and see what comes down the pipe.
As for the CS3 thing, yes it would have been nice if it came at the same time as the intel mac's. But having used QXP7. I don't think quark got any kind of leg up. At this point most folks are either Adobe or Quark. CS is here to stay and I think even in CS2 is still a Quark Killer. (CS* rocks)
In terms of Apple turning it's back on it's loyal fans, I don't think that's the case, I think Apple/Jobs has a pretty good idea where Mac is going and I think we (creatives) are definitely a big part of it. Hell we make/design cool stuff. To turn your back on us is to make Mac uncool, bad marketing plan. Anyhow, enough of this rant, I need to go see the robot chair at Roots. Cheers all
yeah, i think i'll pass on it too. i need to save money.
